World Diabetes Day 2024

World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14, raises awareness of diabetes, a growing global health issue affecting millions. As the number of people with diabetes is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades, it is crucial to focus on prevention, education, and improved care.

ECHAlliance highlights the impactful projects across its ecosystems, including those in Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania, and Portugal, which are innovating in diabetes care through digital health solutions, lifestyle interventions, and cutting-edge research.

World Diabetes Day: A Global Call to Action

World Diabetes Day, observed every November 14, raises global awareness of diabetes, a growing health concern affecting millions worldwide. Established by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization in 1991, this day highlights the urgency of improving education, research, and care for diabetes. With over 537 million adults living with diabetes globally, that number is expected to rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045 if current trends continue. Diabetes leads to approximately 1.5 million deaths each year, underscoring the need for effective preventative action and management strategies.

Many of our ECHAlliance ecosystems, including those in Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania, and Portugal, are deeply involved in diabetes-related projects, driving innovation in healthcare to combat this global health crisis.

Spain – Extremadura Health Ecosystem

The Extremadura Health Ecosystem is a regional network connecting stakeholders across the healthcare and social sectors in Spain’s Extremadura region. The ecosystem is actively involved in two major EU projects addressing diabetes:

  1. CARE4DIABETES (C4D): This project aims to reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes through lifestyle-based interventions. FundeSalud, in collaboration with 12 partners, is adapting successful programs like “Reverse Diabetes2 Now” for local contexts, offering year-long pilots that provide medical and multidisciplinary support to help participants improve blood glucose levels and reduce reliance on medication.
  2. JACARDI – Join Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes: JACARDI is focused on tackling the dual challenges of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The project fosters collaboration among researchers, healthcare providers, and policymakers to develop effective, sustainable solutions that enhance patient outcomes.

Sweden – North Sweden Life Science Ecosystem

The North Sweden Life Science Ecosystem, located in Sweden’s northern region, is focused on advancing life sciences with an emphasis on sustainable health solutions. The ecosystem is engaged in several key diabetes-related initiatives:

  1. The Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP): This long-term, population-based program aims to prevent cardiovascular diseases and diabetes by promoting healthier lifestyles and early risk factor detection across the population.
  2. Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM): WCMM conducts cutting-edge research in metabolic disorders, including diabetes, contributing to a better understanding of the disease and exploring new treatment avenues.

Denmark – Health Tech Hub Copenhagen Ecosystem

The Health Tech Hub Copenhagen Ecosystem fosters collaboration across the healthcare, academic, and industry sectors to drive digital health innovations.

  1. Liva Healthcare: Based in Copenhagen, Liva Healthcare provides personalized digital health coaching through its platform, which helps individuals manage and even prevent type 2 diabetes. The platform uses lifestyle interventions and regular digital check-ins with health coaches to improve health outcomes and support long-term behavior changes. Liva’s program has been integrated into various healthcare initiatives, including the UK’s NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

Lithuania – Lithuanian Health Technology Ecosystem

The Lithuanian Health Technology Ecosystem is focused on advancing health technology through strong partnerships across government, academia, and industry. One notable project involves:

  1. Non-invasive Laser Technology for Diabetes Management: In collaboration with Brolis Semiconductors, researchers from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have developed a needle-free, laser-based technology to monitor blood parameters in real-time. This innovative method could revolutionize diabetes management by providing dynamic insights into blood metabolites without the need for traditional blood sampling, significantly improving the daily management of the disease.

Portugal – Digital Health Portugal Ecosystem

The Digital Health Portugal Ecosystem is a collaborative network of public and private stakeholders working to enhance healthcare innovation through digital solutions. One of the key EU-funded projects under this ecosystem is:

  1. DECSIS II IBÉRIA, LDA – D2. Digital Diabetes: This multidisciplinary project combines medicine, health economics, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and more to develop advanced diagnostic and monitoring methods for diabetes. By integrating innovative technologies, the project aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the disease and its complications, advancing precision medicine and improving the efficiency of diabetes care.

These projects are just a few examples of how our ECHAlliance ecosystems are tackling diabetes through innovative research, technology, and collaborative efforts. As we observe World Diabetes Day, it is crucial to continue supporting initiatives that improve the lives of those living with diabetes, enhance prevention strategies, and push the boundaries of digital health solutions.
