Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, mental disorders, neurological disorders, or cancer are responsible for 80% of the disease burden in the EU countries and the leading causes of avoidable premature deaths.
Life expectancy in EU countries has increased significantly in recent decades. However, longer lives do not always mean healthier lives. In the EU, approximately 1 in 6 adults live with cardiovascular diseases, and the number of people with diabetes mellitus has almost doubled in the last decade, affecting nearly 1 in 10 adults.
FundeSalud (The Foundation for Training and Research of Health Professionals of Extremadura), member of the Extremadura Health Ecosystem, is participating in the Joint Action on CARdiovascular diseases and Diabetes (JACARDI) whose brings together 76 partners from 21 European countries with the common goal of enhancing the quality of care for people affected by cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in Europe.
The initiative is set to deploy 142 pilot projects across Europe, with six focus areas to cover the entire patient journey: from improving health literacy and awareness; enhancing data availability, accessibility and sharing, intensifying screening and primary prevention among high-risk populations, reaching out to people living with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes as well as their care providers and improving service pathways, self-management and labor participation of people living with NCDs.
The project started 9 months ago and partners are currently engaged in context analysis in order to identify the challenges, needs, and priorities related to a specific topic in a given country. This analysis identifies gaps between the current and ideal states and serves as a basis for preparing the pilot project plans.
