IEC is a nonprofit organization committed to driving change at scale in healthcare to improve the wellbeing of people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities – conditions such as Down Syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy.
They are healthcare experts, with decades of experience in clinical care, public and private insurance, and research. Many of the, also have the lived experience of either having a disability, and/or supporting an affected family member. They work through coalitions, bringing together hundreds of people with disabilities and family members, and supporting them to collaborate with healthcare leaders such as insurance executives, hospital leaders, and government leaders. The community spans most states in the USA.
We focus on changing how healthcare is taught, designed and delivered, and covered and paid for. We sponsor regional and national campaigns to change clinical culture and train clinicians. We promote effective care models and develop tools such as an app to help clinicians understand their patients with disabilities. And we invest in improving healthcare data and methods for measuring health outcomes that matter most to community members.
We create virtual communities to co-create solutions, learn from one another, and gradually rebuild the trust that has so deeply eroded between the disability community and the healthcare system.
As a young organization, our needs are to grow our community, including internationally, to learn more rapidly, create a deeper and broader foundation of supporters, and promote the healthcare solutions that we develop.
