Improving healthcare: inspired by the accident reporting culture of aviation

Can healthcare accident rates drop by 580%? A focus on reporting culture in aviation paved the way for improvements across the entire industry and saw this drop despite increased tempo and higher complexity. Dicerra aims to bring the same success to healthcare by adapting this model to the medical field.

Professionals working in healthcare face numerous challenges. The ability to learn from an evolving body of knowledge is hampered by clumsy internal systems, archaic reporting mechanisms, regional disparities and more. Inspired by the approach of non-punitive reporting embedded in aviation, Dicerra built a trusted, anonymous platform to solves these problems. One where users can discuss ideas and collaborate on important issues across departments, specialties, and regions.

Dicerra understands professional reluctance to share concerns or incidents with peers, subordinates, and superiors. It’s uncomfortable to discuss events that didn’t go perfectly, so we avoid it, and someone else like us makes the same decisions resulting in the same mistakes. In highly complex occupations accidents WILL happen – there is no shame in imperfection. There is a better way; one that aviation professionals have leveraged to improve safety in aviation and that healthcare professionals increasingly have an appetite to replicate.

Aviation and healthcare incidents appear together on the platform to familiarize professionals in the medical field to the way aviation experts openly report issues. This will inspire healthcare workers to adopt a similar lessons-learned attitude that will improve safety and effectiveness in their working environments. Our platform allows users to engage in confidential and anonymous discussion real-time with an interconnected community of professionals in both the medical and aviation fields. Users learn from others’ trials so that errors aren’t needlessly repeated.

By allowing users to remain anonymous and freely communicate, we have created a space where ideas matter most. Real-time feedback from other professionals and a host of unique features separates Dicerra from traditional reporting mechanisms and other social media applications. Feedback, discussions and ideas travel far beyond the filing cabinets of the local hospital and inform problem-solving on an international scale.

The incredible team behind Dicerra recognizes that like aviation before, healthcare is facing unique and pressing challenges. Aviation safety was dramatically improved through information sharing, which is why our web & mobile applications have been purpose-built for both healthcare and aviation professionals who are driven to improve their profession every day.

What do the professionals say?

Recently, the CEO of Dicerra spoke with Dr. Brian Goldman, MD. Dr Goldman is a Canadian emergency physician, author, public speaker, and radio personality. He also hosts an award-winning current affairs radio series, White Coat, Black Art, and has written four books: The Night Shift: Real Life in the Heart of the ER, The Secret Language of Doctors, The Power of Kindness, and The Power of Teamwork. They discussed among other things, what the healthcare community can learn from the aviation industry and what improvements Dr. Goldman would like to see implemented in the medical field.
