Our ecosystem is composed of:
- The universities from Transylvania (Babeș-Bolyai University, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy , University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca) – catalyzed by the C-EDU Cluster.
- The IT companies from Transylvania, brought together by two IT clusters: Transilvania IT Cluster and Cluj IT Cluster.
- The healthcare start-ups from the region.
- The angel investors and corporate investors.
- The public and private healthcare providers.
- The regional and local authorities (ADR Nord Vest and Cluj-Napoca City Hall).

What EU funding/collaboration are you involved with, or you would like to be part of?
- EIT Health – FreshBlood is the EIT RIS Hub for Romania since 2018 and was acknowledged as one of the highest performing RIS Hubs of the EITHealth network being awarded the “innovation community leadership awards” in 2020.
- SCI-FI – FreshBlood, together with other partners from the health sector across Europe, organises a training course for scientists based in any Horizon Europe country. In this course, participants learn useful skills that will help them be ready to work in the pharma and medtech industries.
- DIGIT- PRE – Innovative Solutions in Prevention, Prediction & Remote care. FreshBlood is part of DIGIT-PRE since 2022.
- Health-Chain – Boosting digital transformation of healthcare across regions. FreshBlood has been part of Health-Chain since the beginning of 2024.
What are the key priorities and themes for your ecosystem?
Our priorities are:
- To use the technological and medical know-how and infrastructures from Transylvania.
- To increase collaboration with other ecosystems at European and international levels.
- To ensure the sustainability of our initiatives.
- To focus on ecosystem development through capacity building and offering healthcare start-up support.
What is your primary strength as an ecosystem?
We are multicultural, adaptable, and highly motivated to collaborate with anyone interested in health and willing to work together.
Who are your clinical champions, either hospitals, clinicians, or specialties?
- Medisprof Cancer Center, an oncology hospital in Transylvania, is our champion of 2024. They are part of Health-Chain. FreshBlood has partnered with Medisprof Cancer Center to solve a challenge that is important for the hospital: the AITRIS challenge seeks an Automated Imagery Tool for diagnostic and Stadialisation purposes, aiding radiologists in providing radiology results in RECIST form for evaluation by medical oncologists, thus guiding treatment decisions.
- Medical Clinic 1 from the Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy that collaborated with the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca to develop new applications of pulmonary ultrasonography and contributed to the implementation of artificial intelligence in this field.
- PsyTech from the Babeș-Bolyai University, as they are building innovative services and solutions in Mental Health.
