The new PhD program is expected to produce a new generation of high performing early stage researchers in innovation and technology management able to embrace the major challenges of future industrial systems.
The European Training Network for InduStry Digital Transformation across Innovation Ecosystems project, also known as EINST4INE, has been selected to commence grant preparation under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN) scheme.
If successful, the consortium consisting of six European academic partners and 15 industry partners and coordinated by RMIT Europe will be awarded a total value of €4M.
EINST4INE, which is led by Professor Anne-Laure Mention, Director of RMIT’s Global Business Innovation Enabling Capability Platform, belongs to a portfolio of projects focusing on open innovation, which also includes the RISE project OpenInnoTrain.
Dr Justyna Dabrowska, RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow, is co-Chief Investigator of EINST4INE and Boaz Kogon, Innovation & Research Associate at RMIT Europe, is the Project Coordinator.
The EINST4INE consortium comprises RMIT Europe (Spain), Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (Finland), Aarhus University (Denmark), University of Cambridge (UK), Universität Stuttgart (Germany), Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Italy) and Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (Italy), as well as 15 industry organisations and two academic partnering organisations: RMIT University (Australia) and the Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley (USA).
Professor Anne-Laure Mention says that the project aims to develop new concepts, approaches and methods in the area of digital transformation and brings together a unique group of world-leading experts in the areas of Open Innovation, Industry 4.0, digital transformation and innovation ecosystems.
The grant evaluation team rated the project highly for its ‘very strong, ambitious and timely research program’ and praised its ‘substantial inter/multidisciplinary and intersectoral aspects’.
EINST4INE is one of the 114 projects selected for funding under the European Training Network scheme, and the only one under the Economic Sciences panel.
In 2020, 1,285 project proposals were received under the highly competitive ITN call.
“EINST4INE’s mission is to develop a cohort of leaders in research and business, and equip them with a unique set of hybrid tech-digital behavioural skills and cutting-edge knowledge,” Mention says.
“More specifically, the project focuses on developing a knowledge base in four complementary areas: the human side of digital transformation; coordination and decision-making; enabling technologies and new value creation logics; and the orchestration of innovation ecosystems.
“To achieve this goal, EINST4INE will offer an exceptional program providing a large range of multidisciplinary research and practical training combined with workshops, summer schools as well as unique international, interdisciplinary mobility and secondment opportunities across Europe, USA and Australia.”
RMIT Europe will be fundamental in lending its expertise to developing the training workshops, masterclasses and summer schools key to EINST4INE’s provision of a multidisciplinary research and practical training program.
To kick off the project, 15 PhD candidates will be recruited from a worldwide hiring campaign expected to begin in early 2021.
The students, four of whom will be based at RMIT Europe, will work on a set of projects assessing the processes applied by organisations to achieve digital transformation in the context of Industry 4.0.
