Pfizer is a multinational enterprise with over 75,000 employees and more than 35 manufacturing facilities worldwide.

The company is constantly growing the number of offices, manufacturing, and scientific sites. And once the world had to face a global pandemic, the load on Pfizer employees (including a technical team) increased significantly.

Every day the tech experts have to not only deploy and manage hundreds of websites and applications but also control the adherence to compliance requirements and keep the workflow streamlined and effective.

Client Request

Our client required technical assistance for many aspects of the existing workflow, but the ultimate goal was to develop a number of tools that would help the global digital operation department automate the tasks that either were performed manually or required too much time to complete.

The Outcome

During the course of 17 months, the Light IT Global team has created a robust infrastructure, delivered a configuration management database that would facilitate industry compliance management procedures, introduced ETL pipelines to improve data processing, and incorporated a backstage tool to provide a comprehensive infrastructure overview.

Business Challenge

Due to the major workload that is constantly growing and the necessity for regular system scaling to ensure stable work under any circumstance, our client required a tech partner that would help them to come up with a set of technical measures that would increase operational efficiency.

Considering the fact that healthcare has one of the strictest industry standards when it comes to data privacy, integrity, and security, the set of specific measures and practices that needed to be implemented was extensive as well.

While the continuity of all the business processes is vital for such an influential healthcare market player, our client’s goal was to find an IT provider that would not only develop a top-quality solution but also make sure it seamlessly integrates into the existing infrastructure.

Implementation

Working for a multinational corporation, Pfizer’s tech experts deal with hundreds of applications and APIs both for customers and internal use. Hence, the continuity and the simplicity of the development process are a must. To achieve that, Light IT Global has created a framework that became a solid foundation for the solutions’ development and a portal that simplified a multitude of tech tasks, including the development, configuration management, and operational environments from end to end.

The Configuration Management Database is serving as the record system for the IT equipment (e.g. network equipment, servers, websites, mobile apps, etc.) and facilitates compliance requirements adherence.

The CMDB is connected to 4 bespoke internal platforms that were created to make the process of website and app development deployment easier and faster as well as to aid minor tasks automation (taking and delivering data backups to developers, onboarding and registering domain names, triggering and reporting on application security scans, etc.).

To guarantee better flexibility and operational efficiency boost, Light IT Global’s team has chosen AWS serverless computing and used Amazon APIs and services to the max.

To ensure trouble-free control data export into an asset registry, every gateway has a backstage software catalog. And access to data is strictly regulated depending on the user roles.

While working on the problem of task automatization, Light IT Global’s experts took it one step further and introduced ETL pipelines that improved the quality of data extraction, processing, conversion, and transferring.

As a result of cooperation with Light IT Global, our client has received a set of comprehensive solutions that transformed and improved the processes of development and deployment of websites and applications.

4 bespoke internal platforms paired up with a powerful custom CMDB eliminate the need for performing deployment-related tasks manually, help to protect the data from unauthorized access, ensure compliance, and workflow automatization.

A custom backstage tool helps to control the automated management and provides a broad infrastructure overview.

Precise queuing mechanisms incorporated into an event-driven solution aid load leveling and shock absorbing.

All of the new functionality developed by Light IT Global has been seamlessly integrated into an existing system safeguarding its coherence and stability. Easy migration became possible with careful data mapping on the new data layout.

Website deployment solution

Business Outcome

The newly-introduced software has proven to be extremely efficient almost immediately. The automation rate is now 3 times higher than before our experts took over the project. It took a massive burden off Pfizer’s Global Digital Operations Department and dramatically increased productivity.

The time required to complete most tasks via the CMDB was cut from 8h to 30 min, and more than 6000 environments were taken under control. The deployment processes on those environments were successfully automated (including DB backup creation, environment cloning, etc.).

The system has proven to be helpful and fail-safe even during the time of the Covid outburst when great pressure was put on pharmaceutical and biotech companies. But, more importantly, it brings our client value up until this day.
