Start-up Niverbec: Technology serving emergency

Do you know that 570,000 deaths every year are classified as “preventable deaths”? An Italian start-up has made it its own mission to make emergency healthcare more efficient, supporting public administrations, emergency responders and citizens at critical moments. Remember: Timely and accurate medical information can make the difference between life and death, wherever you are in the world.

“An urgent problem is emerging in Europe: as many as 570,000 deaths are classified as “preventable deaths,” where individuals could be saved if the quality of health care in first aid improved, particularly for the elderly. This gap becomes even more pronounced when spoken language, anxiety, unconsciousness, or lack of patient awareness become significant obstacles for first responders in “first” aid. To find a solution to this problem, NIVERBEC was created,” Italo Pasotti, CTO of the startup, tells us.

The current system for managing medical information in emergency situations, both in many Italian regions and in other European countries, faces severe limitations. Even today, many areas still use paper-based systems, which not only slow down decision-making for first responders but also pose a privacy risk to patients’ data. Even in regions where digital solutions are in place, they are often limited to simple tablet-based transcriptions, with data that can be inaccurate or incomplete.

This is where NIVERBEC comes in, an Italian start-up that has developed and patented the NIVER system: an advanced, secure, and regulatory-compliant platform that enables first responders to access vital patient data in under 10 seconds. NIVER is not just a technological solution but sets a new standard in the management of healthcare information during emergencies. Utilizing encryption systems and certified security protocols, patient data is accessible only to authorized personnel, while ensuring the speed necessary to save lives. Often, the failure to immediately recognize conditions, allergies, or life-saving medications compromises the intervention and endangers the patient’s life.

NIVER technology essentially transforms common objects that we carry every day, such as cards, rings, bracelets, or necklaces, into devices that, when needed, become a key for the first responder. NIVER protects the medical data recorded by the patient’s family doctor or trusted physician through a secure and encrypted system, accessible only by authorized first responders via the patient’s digital key. Additionally, the data is not stored on the devices themselves but remains under the exclusive control of the patient’s attending physician. NIVER creates a direct digital link between doctor, patient, and first responder.

The European Commission has repeatedly stressed the need for rapid and secure tools to manage healthcare data during emergencies, especially for citizens who travel or are in cross-border contexts. In an official statement in 2019, both the European Commission and the European Court of Auditors pointed out the urgent need to fill this gap. NIVERBEC addresses exactly this need by offering a secure and reliable network for transmitting healthcare data during emergencies, allowing the sharing of information between regions and European countries.

NIVERBEC has been designed and patented to be easily replicable at the European level, adaptable to the needs of each country, and compliant with international regulations.

NIVERBEC’s solutions have been awarded and recognized nationally on several occasions. The first and most important award was the Health Forum Award 2023 (and as finalists in 2024).
