EIB – Social Innovation Tournament 2019

Here is a pre announcement for this competition which aims to promote innovative ideas in relation to the fight against social exclusion, and to identify and reward projects offering substantial benefits to society, or which demonstrate best practice and are replicable.

Tournament Objectives

The aim of the Tournament is to promote innovative ideas in relation to the fight against social exclusion, and to identify and reward projects offering substantial benefits to society, or which demonstrate best practice and are replicable.

Projects can cover a wide range of fields, from education and health care to natural or urban environment, and may involve new technologies, new systems or new processes.

Previous Social Innovation Tournament 2018 Winners

Glowee Speak Social (Portugal), iNex Circular (France), Chrysalix Technologie – Bioflex (United Kingdom), Sensovida (Spain) and QTrobot Autism Therapy Store (Luxembourg) are the winners of the Social Innovation Tournament 2018 which took place on 23 October in Copenhagen, Denmark.

  • Glowee (France) offers a sustainable living light source powered by waste products and producing reusable biomass, in order to illuminate our world by harnessing the natural power of bioluminescence (natural properties of animals to produce light.
  • Speak Social (Portugal)is a social tech start-up that promotes the social inclusion of migrants and refugees by connecting them with locals through a language and culture exchange programme to which everyone can apply in order to share their language and learn a new one.
  • iNex Circular( France), the “Tinder of Waste”, is a platform that enables one company’s waste to become the raw material of others.
  • Chrysalix Technologie – Bioflex (UK) is a solvent process that uses unwanted waste wood as a very cheap raw material to produce clean and low-cost chemicals, fuels and materials.
  • Sensovida (Spain) is an advanced telecare solution that enables elderly people to live independently and enjoy life in their own homes.
  • QTrobot Autism Therapy Store (Luxembourg) is an expressive humanoid robot with an intuitive user interface and therapeutic application to address the economic and social challenges of autism.

What is being offered?:

  • General Category First Prize – €50,000
  • General Category Second Prize – €20,000
  • Special Category First Prize – €50,000
  • Special Category Second Prize – €20,000

Travel expenses are available for up to two members of a team, or for individuals. with proposals selected for the second round to attend the mentoring workshop and the Final Event.

Projects also compete for a residency at IRIS (Incubadora Regional de Inovação Social). Two projects will be selected to attend INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship programme in Fontainebleau, France.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/245382043″][vc_column_text]Who Can Apply

Individuals and teams from both not-for-profit and for-profit organisations can apply, including:

  • Young entrepreneurs
  • Social enterprises
  • Private companies
  • NGOs
  • Government
  • Local government
  • Universities

Award Categories

There are two categories of Award – General Category and Special Category. In 2019, the Special Category Prize will be awarded to projects focused on sustainable consumption and production (including circular economy).

Projects are typically related to fighting unemployment, marginalisation of disadvantaged communities and promoting access to education in a wide range of fields, from education and health care to natural or urban environment, through new technologies, new systems, and new processes.

Entries should target identified problems in relation to social exclusion and offer solutions with social value and impact.

Projects may be submitted at different stages, from innovative ideas which could be implemented within a reasonable time frame, to already implemented innovative solutions with tangible outcomes in terms of social impact which could serve as best practices and replicable models.

How To Apply

Applications are made via an online submission system which will be live in February 2019. The tournament is carried out in two rounds. Approximately 15 projects are selected to continue to the second round. The shortlisted projects are invited to a mentoring boot camp to provide them with the necessary guidance for the finalisation of their proposals. In the Final Event, all the finalists have to present and defend their project to a Jury composed of social innovation specialists.
