Remote, digital monitoring of Chronic Patients with COPD, CVD or Liver Failure

University Hospital of Odense (OUH) is one of Denmark’s largest university hospitals, having more than 10,000 employees and supporting approximately 105,000 patients per year. OUH has a reputation for Research and Development, and for leading the field in applying healthcare technology as a supplement to standard clinical services. Tunstall works with the Cardiologic, Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal Outpatient Clinics, and the Lung Diseases Department using remote digital monitoring to support people at home and avoid admission/readmission. Patients use devices such as spirometers, pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitors to take their vital signs readings, and these are transmitted via a tablet to a software platform.

Clinicians can then access the data via an app, tracking data over time to identify deterioration and enable early intervention to avoid hospital admission. One to one video consultations can be delivered in the place of physical meetings to reduce the need for travel, increasing caseload capacity, reducing carbon footprint and costs for public healthcare. Patients enjoy an improved quality of life as their health is stabilised and they are able to remain at home.

Digital care calls in elderly care

A number of Danish Municipalities have been using Tunstall’s services to make digital care visits to older citizens in their own homes: Odense; Guldborgsund; Ballerup Gladsaxe; Rudersdal. Professionals in a specialist monitoring centre use a web application to communicate with one or many citizens, with citizens using an app to receive the calls. The service focuses on ensuring wellbeing, appropriate nutrition and medication compliance, and makes approximately 3,000 care calls each month.

Older people can receive more frequent contact with the same care staff, and the municipalities benefit by transforming some physical visits into digital ones, helping them to provide care to a greater number of people despite decreasing budgets.

“Technology is forming an increasing part of health and care delivery in Denmark and the Nordics, becoming part of daily operations. As the population ages, healthcare technology is a vital part of the way providers are supporting a variety of diseases and patient groups. Our investment in academic evaluation and RTC studies is proving the benefits of including technology in pathways to empower patients and enable population management.”
