WCEA’s mission in Africa is to provide sustainable and innovative e-health and m-health technology and CPD to help frontline workers to improve health incomes in Africa. This is achieved by partnering with local authorities and organizations. We are proud to effectively collaborate with the Nursing Council of Kenya, with whom we have worked longer than any other council in Africa.
We asked Ms. Edna Tallam – Kimaiyo, Registrar and CEO of the Nursing Council of Kenya to share her opinion on how it’s been working with the WCEA and the part we play in the training of nurses and midwives in Kenya.

“In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for nursing and midwifery is essential for career progression and maintaining person-centered, safe, and effective evidence-informed care in the workplace. The partnership between the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and the World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA) has played a crucial role in continued fitness to practice and patient safety and maintaining professional standards.

The partnership, through the provision of free online CPD courses, is central to nurses’ and midwives’ lifelong learning and has been vital for keeping nurses’ knowledge and skills up-to-date, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Working with WCEA has helped the Council equip practitioners with the knowledge to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and contribute to building a robust and resilient healthcare system in primary care, secondary care, tertiary care, and quaternary care. This will go a long way towards the attainment of His Excellency the President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda on Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Agenda 63, and Kenya Vision 2030.

Effective continuing professional development initiatives like those provided by the WCEA are needed to support practicing health care workers (HCWs), who are bound by limitations of time and finances when it comes to lifelong learning, to reach high standards of care. The Council is grateful for the critical role WCEA plays in the provision of training material for nurses and midwives in Kenya. To date, 49,410 nurses and midwives have accessed the resources offered on the NCK-WCEA Education Portal and Mobile Application, where 881,520 courses have been taken by the practitioners.

Moving forward, the Council is committed to ensuring the continuity of this e-learning opportunity to bring expert knowledge to our HCWs in the field and provide a flexible learning option adaptable to local settings.”
