This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the Scottish Government through Health Innovation South East Scotland.
The aim of the competition is to improve outcomes for hip fracture patients by developing a system using routinely collected health data and data-analytics techniques.
The system must optimise complex patient care pathways to deliver hip fracture care according to national care standards.
This is phase 1 of a potential 2-phase competition. A decision to proceed with phase 2 will depend on the outcomes from phase 1 and assessment of a separate application into a subsequent phase 2 competition.
Only successful applicants from phase 1 will be able to apply to take part in phase 2.
Successful applicants will receive funding, as well as guidance from NHS Lothian, University of Edinburgh and access to the DataLoch repository of health data for South East Scotland.

This briefing event will give you the background information and overall rationale for this challenge announced by Innovate UK and led by Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) with the support of the University of Edinburgh.
A data driven solution is needed to improve the outcomes for hip fracture patients in Scotland. This challenge is seeking for digital and data driven partners to work with clinical and informatic experts within NHS Lothian to evaluate hip fracture data and develop a solution that can automatically and accurately extract meaningful data sets from various healthcare systems to support clinical decision making. The overall goal is to develop a generalisable system that can provide accessible, timely and accurate data from routinely collected healthcare information across primary and secondary care. This data-driven solution would then provide clinicians, managers and policymakers with timely access to healthcare information in order to manage/ develop/ improve services and patient care.
Organisations can apply for a share of £160,000 (including VAT) to develop new solutions to facilitate the automatic extraction and analysis of hip fracture data from primary and secondary care, using artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning to facilitate the delivery of hip fracture care according to patient-specific pathways and national care standards.
