Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future

Topol review

In December 2017, we published Facing the Facts, Shaping the Future – a draft health and care Workforce Strategy for England to 2027.

Five major independent reviews have been commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health as part of the strategy, including the Topol Review: Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future.

Interim Report published June 2018

The Topol Review, led by cardiologist, geneticist, and digital medicine researcher Dr Eric Topol and facilitated by HEE, is exploring how to prepare the healthcare workforce, through education and training, to deliver the digital future. This will enable NHS staff to make the most of game-changing technologies such as genomics, digital medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics to improve services and help ensure a sustainable NHS.

The interim report has now been published.

The call for evidence has now closed

The call for evidence has now closed and we would like to thank everyone who contributed their case studies, evidence or insights.

Their shared experience is helping to build an understanding about which technologies are already being used effectively now, and which offer the best potential to be used in healthcare in the future.  The final report will explore the likely impact of these changes on the required skills, selection, education, curricula, training, development and learning of current and future NHS staff.

Next steps

The final Topol Review will be published in early 2019
