Europe takes a leap: launching the Strategy for Digital and Green Skills in healthcare workforce – BeWell project

BeWell project is a multi-stakeholder movement, created by and with the health and care workforce, to develop digital and green skills intelligence for a strategy focused on the upskilling and reskilling of the European health and care workforce.

The first version of the BeWell Skills Strategy was launched on 7 June 2023, during the EHMA2023 conference, in Rome. The BeWell Skills Strategy is about the digital and green upskilling and reskilling of the health and care workforce.

This strategy is being developed in two versions. This first version has been created using BeWell consortium members expertise, and skills intelligence gathered. It will be shared broadly with the public to gather feedback from all stakeholders; concurrently, the BeWell project will pilot new qualifications, and the results of both initiatives will be incorporated into the second and final version to be published in June 2026.

During the dedicated focus session “Care integration and sustainability: digital and green skills for the health workforce”, European Commission representative Maya Matthews (Head of Unit) outlined its relevance towards creating flexible curricula and preparing the healthcare workforce of the future to face current and future challenges.

George Valiotis (Executive Director, European Health Management Association) introduced the Skills Strategy: “Taking a strategic approach, we have currently completed the first version of the strategy & will develop the second version at a later stage. This allows us to gather valuable input & feedback from stakeholders, incorporating their opinions & comments into the final version of the strategy”.

Dr Michele Falkenbach (European Observatory on Health Systems & Policies) presented a comprehensive overview of the definition of digital skills, literacy and competency, while Prof. Ronald Batenburg (Nivel Research) reflected on the definition of green skills and how to build upon existing training programs for healthcare practice.
