TECNALIA is a leading Research and Technological Development Centre in Europe and member of BRTA (Basque Research and Technology Alliance) whose mission is to transform technology into GDP, helping companies to be more competitive and generate wealth and employment. Its key scopes of action are: Advanced Manufacturing, Digital Transformation, Energy Transition, Sustainable Mobility, Health and Urban Ecosystem.

TECNALIA currently has a team of over 1,400 experts (43% women – 57% men) from 29 different nationalities. Its activity consists of visualising, identifying and developing comprehensive technological solutions together with its clients. Among them, there are more than 7,400 companies with which it has worked since its origins in 2011, 75% of which are SMEs.

Its revenue in 2019 amounted to 115 million euros, up 5% on 2018, whereby the 50% in revenue from activity with companies. In terms of impact, for every Euro invested by a company in R&D with TECNALIA, an average turnover increase of €8.3 is obtained.

In 2019, the Sale of Industrial Property Rights section recorded 4.7 million euros in income, with a portfolio of 752 patents. It took part in 12 New Technology-Based Companies (NTBC) and 20 of the sponsored NTBCs are still active today. They generated a total of 287 jobs and a turnover of 34 million euros. TECNALIA is the second private Spanish organisation in European patent applications.

In Europe, TECNALIA has consolidated its position as the first private organisation in Spain in project contracting, participation and leadership under the European Commission’s HORIZON 2020programme,in partnership with 110 Basque companies and 175 others from the rest of the country.

One of the keys to TECNALIA’s success in collaborating with companies has been its commitment to maintaining a business relationship model which is increasingly strategic and based on trust, collaboration, and a shared technological strategy to achieve the highest value-adding proposal to boost competitiveness. A model that is allowing the centre to set up collaboration plans with companies which will be developed together over the coming years.
