During the Web Summit 2019 in Lisbon, the European Commission launched a Call for action inviting companies, organisations, schools and institutions to recognise the need to bridge the digital skills gap in Europe.

The lack of skilled workers on the European job market is holding back the digital transformation of businesses. 53 % of companies that recruited or tried to recruit ICT specialists reported difficulties in filling these vacancies. It means that companies are not able to innovate and use advanced digital technologies as they struggle to find digital experts in particular in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, supercomputing or big data.

Europe needs to address this issue if it wants to remain globally competitive. That is why, the European Commission has launched a Call for action to mobilise the community and incentivise new solutions.

First organisations that endorsed this Call for action at the Web Summit 2019 were:

Companies and organisations that already support training courses, traineeships or re-skilling programmes in their city, region, country or across Europe can join more than 400 members of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition, with over 100 pledges to improve digital talents in Europe. You can make a pledge at the Pledgeviewer.

The Commission also supports initiatives that directly help Europeans gain digital skills: EU Code Week and Digital Opportunity Traineeships.
