HEI-Lab: immersive VR as a tool to help individuals with autism deal with change

24th May 2022

HEI-lab researchers are team members of the EU iDEAL project with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) adults as target groups. In this framework it is aimed to design, test and publish an innovative immersive VR technology/game as a tool to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder to acquire and develop the skills and key competences to deal with change in their daily life and routine. Also, to conduct field research to investigate whether immersive VR technology helps individuals with ASD effectively deal with changes in their daily routine.

HEI-lab researchers are team members of the EU iDEAL project: immersive VR as a tool to help individuals with autism deal with change.

This framework was aimed at designing, testing and publishing an innovative immersive VR technology/game as a tool to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder to acquire and develop the skills and key competences to deal with change in their daily life and routine.

A secondary goal was to conduct field research to investigate whether immersive VR technology helps individuals with ASD effectively deal with changes in their daily routine. In this project, HEI-Lab researchers coordinated the task-related with VR game design, development and validation. The VR game has been designed according to the participants’ profiles and the analysis of their needs as identified by the consortium members. The immersion into the VR game is performed by using an Oculus Quest and the participants are hooked to psychophysiological electrodes to assess the respiratory rate, skin conductance level, and heart rate.

To validate the VR game, the HEI-Lab researchers apply usability and performance scales, as well as psychophysiological measures to access biological activation. After immersion, participants fill out a Self-Assessment Manikin, the System Usability Scale, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale and the Social Desirability Scale and the Big Five Inventory Scale

Discover more about HEI-Lab:

The concept behind HEI-Lab is rooted in the framework of human-environment interaction, and looks at the mutual effects between human behavior and its contexts. Our mission is to converge knowledge from Psychology, Design and Videogames into a transdisciplinary scientific platform to study human behavior within this interchangeable view.
