Evondos in UK Trade shows – on journey to improve medication adherence
Few words on medication adherence
Medication use together with health care costs have been on the increase for a long time. Non-adherence to medication can result in worsening in condition, increased costs around healthcare (1). There are estimates that non-adherence can cause 125000 preventable deaths, and 33-69% of hospitalizations are due to poor adherence (2, 3). Often times the reason to non-adherence is seen as an patient issue, not as system or clinician responsibility.
Several studies have been conducted to assess the prevalence of non-adherence. According to WHO only 50% of medication is taken as prescribed (4). On other papers non-adherence ranges from 25 to 50% (5).
Non-adherence is a common problem and causes significant economic burden, not to forget the consequences to individual lives. The good news is that it is a preventable issue. One way to improve adherence is to utilize automated medicine dispensing robots. Evondos has shown 99% adherence with over 40 million doses dispensed.
