Barcelona, 28 February 2017 - Digital Health & Wellness Summit (DHWS17) @ 4 Years From Now (4YFN) 2017 concluded yesterday in Barcelona providing opportunities for global companies, start-ups, governments, hospitals, investors, researchers and patients to develop joint digital solutions for healthcare challenges. DHWS17 congregated more than 200 international experts from leading companies such as Roche, Bupa, Adeslas, Axa, Orange Healthcare, McLaren, Privalia and Telefónica. Most of the innovative solutions presented at the conference will benefit from a year-long tailored support by the European Connected Health Alliance (ECHAlliance). DHWS17 is one step of ECHAlliance initiative towards development and impulse of creative ideas for healthcare challenges that will continue in future events across the ECHAlliance network of ecosystems and international gatherings, like eHealth Week 2017 (10-12 May, Malta) or the Estonian EU Presidency (July-December 2017).
DHWS17 has been the vertical health programme at 4 Years From Now (4YFN), the event of reference for digital entrepreneurs and startups within the framework of the Mobile World Congress.

Bleddyn Rees, Board Director at ECHAlliance, said that

“we continue to work with 4YFN because the financial pressures on every health systems and the increased need for healthcare services for people means that innovation in products and services are desperately needed to help solve the challenges these two pressures are creating. So we want to present the needs of healthcare systems and the possible solutions and in so doing match needs and solutions.”
“By explaining healthcare challenges and needs, we help the innovators whether they are start-ups, SMEs or global businesses better understand the market and detect opportunities. The ECHAlliance promotes the collaboration of the willing to drive the international transformation of healthcare. Finally Barcelona is the centre of the Mobile World, it is a Smart City and a driver for digital health so a fantastic place and ecosystem to hold our Health and Wellness Summit,”
he added.

Successful live matchmaking between demand and offer
ECHAlliance designed DHWS17 around the objective to match demand side (hospitals, governments, insurances) and suppliers (industry, start-ups, entrepreneurs). Close to 100 innovations on both sides have been submitted to an international call and the best ones have been selected for the event. These needs and solutions were focused on four topics: Virtual Reality & Games, the Digital Insurer, Diabetes and Chronic Diseases Management, and Corporate Wellness.

Tim Jürgens, Head of New Business Models and Emminens Healthcare Services at Roche Diabetes Care, highlighted the relevance of collaboration in the panel focused on Chronic Diseases management.

“Digital Health will be the enabler for improving the management of chronic diseases. This is due to the fact that different data points will be connected, the different providers will be connected and different insights will be generated based on this data. In the end there will be an ecosystem for chronic diseases enabling to achieve better health outcomes,” said Tim Jürgens.
“In the area of chronic diseases things are getting more complex and to really manage the health challenges we will see in the future is the time to partner and find new ways of collaboration. At the DHWS17 during the Mobile World Congress and 4 Years From Now, we see the opportunity of cross collaboration with ECHAlliance to spot and identify where the trends go and identify what will come in 3 or 4 years, and this is inspiring us to innovate as well to identify potential partners for us,”
he added.

Purpose-driven design for healthcare
At afternoon’s keynote, Amy Cueva, Chief Experience Officer and co-founder at Mad*Pow, delivered a keynote address focused on the importance of purpose-driven designs for healthcare:

“True human centre design is a process where we invite the patient to the design process, finding what are their real needs and including them by finding a solutions that will work for them.”
“We have to be sure that we’re focused on providing real value in the life of the people we are serving: it can be patients, employees, doctors… Of course we want to provide financial results, but we also want to make sure that we’re not monetizing sickness. We’re getting people to better health outcomes,” she added.

Next, leading Digital Health Investors shared at DHWS17 their vision of the market and revealed which types of start-ups & solutions they are seeking and what are their criteria for investment.

“The biggest characteristic we are looking for in start-ups is being able to pinpoint a need that haven’t been solved, a solution that is really working. In healthcare, a lot of companies are focused too much on the product and not enough in the patient and the consumer. The usability of the solution is something really important” said Clara Leonard, associate at Digital Health Ventures.
